DIY Crafts to Make with the Kids this Summer

by Waverly Wilde

The kids spend all year looking forward to summer, but 9 times out of 10, once school gets out, all they want to do is sit around on their phones, the same way they do during the school year. Summer should be about fun and family time, and what brings the family together better than crafts?

Hands-on creativity is a great way to keep the kids thoughtful and engaged while school is out for summer, plus it gives you plenty of bonding time with the young ones. These recipes for kid-favorite crafts are easy to make, and provide hours of summer fun!

Homemade Playdough

Sure, you could go out and just buy Playdough for the kids. But where’s the fun in that? Making your own at home saves money and makes for a fun-filled summer afternoon. Plus, you can mix your own colors and even add in glitter and essential oils for some extra fun!

No matter what shade your little ones need for that dragon sculpture, you’ll have the right color on hand when you make your own Playdough. All it takes is a few simple ingredients and a powerful stove to get the job done!

Pro-tip: electric and induction cooktops are especially good for this job, since spills can be easily wiped up before they turn into a big, doughy mess.

Refrigerator Slime

Remember when homemade slime was all the rage? Glittery, goopy, foamy, or fluffy – however you like your slime, there’s a recipe to make the perfect one right at home. So bring back the trend with these fun slime recipes!

These recipes don’t use any glue either, so they’re safer for the kids to play with and don’t leave quite so much of a mess. They do require some patience though, as each recipe has to spend anywhere from 12 hours to 4 days in the fridge to set. The results are tons of fun, and they make for a fun science experiment too, as some recipes tend to be more successful than others. The kids will be as excited about making the slime as they’ll be about playing with it!

DIY Shrinky Dinks

Remember shrinky dinks? It turns out, the defining craft of the 90’s is super easy to make, and you don’t even have to buy a special kit to do it!

A plastic takeout container (unused, please), scissors, markers, aluminum foil, and an oven are all you need to make adorable miniature charms for keychains, necklaces, suncatchers, and more! Just cut out the top and bottom of the container to make flat, plastic sheets and let the kids have fun drawing colorful shapes or even their favorite cartoon characters. A few minutes in the oven and poof! Summer memories instantly immortalized.

Make the most of your summer and encourage the kids to do the same! These DIY crafts will help get your creative juices flowing and keep the temptation to indulge in lazy summer afternoons in front of a screen far away.
